Someone asked me why I’m a paramedic and I believe in holistic medicine. As if one must choose between them. So I’ve spent a couple weeks thinking about it and here is your answer. Which I’ve decided to share with everyone because I think it’s important.
I feel you maybe do not fully understand the job of a paramedic. The purpose of an ambulance. Or the true function of an ER. Please do not misread what I am about to say. If you ever feel you need emergency services please call 911. Or go to the ER. The purpose of these services is to sustain life in a true life threatening emergency. When you are not breathing you need artificial ventilation not 4 drops of lavender rubbed clockwise on your feet. When you are having a stroke you need a neuro surgeon ASAP. There is no oil that replaces a cath lab. You NEED an ambulance and an appropriate hospital for those things. I have full faith and confidence in the abilities of our neuro, cardiac, trauma and ER doctors.
But I also believe there is a way of life that would be less likely to introduce you to heart doctors and cath labs. This is where I believe in holistic medicine. I believe in prevention. Can I get an amen? Prevention is key!!! I believe in building a strong healthy immune system. I believe in gut health. I believe in taking care of the body you were given. There are illnesses that are terrible and miserable but not immediately life threatening that I believe do well with a holistic approach. There are even things doctors cannot help you with. Such as must viruses. Have you ever heard the words “we have to let it run its course” ?? What about cancer? This is a huge one for me. I believe a significant percentage of cancers can be directly linked to the chemicals we expose ourselves to. What if we stopped doing that? What would happen? Maybe we would be less like to get cancer. It is worth it!!
What if we mixed holistic and western medication? What if we used oils and herbs and vitamins and clean products to boost our immune system, build healthy gut flora, support compromised body systems. But we also took a prescribed medication for something. Maybe type 1 diabetes for example. It can work. You do not have to pick one over the other. You can use what works for your body!
The goal in my house is to learn to listen to our bodies. Your body talks if you will listen. For example a fever is your body attacking something it doesn’t like. It is creating an environment that is not hospitable to that invader. That’s why I allow the people in my house to run a fever up to 102* without intervention. Your body is working. Let it work! We don’t take meds to stop diarrhea or vomiting. Your body is expelling what it can’t handle. Let it out. Support your bodies natural functions. Stay hydrated. Use herbs and oils to provide immune boost and creature comfort and help your body fight those nasty bugs off faster than they otherwise would have.
This is not a one or the other topic. You can use both. You can do what is right for you regardless of the opinions of others!!
For those wondering what holistic medicine might look like but is scared to ask please know I've been where you are. I was not interested in charging crystals under a full moon to prevent heart disease. Holistic medicine is as simple as hot tea, Epsom salt baths, food that fuels you rather than poisons you. Grounding, earthing, yoga, stretching, journaling, meditation, essential oils, herbal tea, herbal or salt bathes, gargling with salt water, massages, acupressure, acupuncture and fasting are all holistic approaches to life and health. Some people will do one but not another. And that's the beauty of this journey being your journey. You own it and you make it what you want.
Please note this is MY OPINION!!!! This is not the opinion of my place of employment, my medical director, the companies I often represent or brands I choose to use or avoid. This opinion belongs to me and me alone.
